Chinese

Master’s Research

Today, Chinese has three prescriptively accepted third person singular pronouns: 他 (ta ‘he’), 她 (ta ‘she’), and 它 (ta ‘it’). Although they have different written forms, their pronunciations are identical (ta). Yet in the last decade there has been the emergence of a fourth, non-standard spelling form of the third person pronoun in computer mediated communication (CMC): ta. The usage of ta, instead of standard characters which encode gender information, obscures the intended referent’s gender, simultaneously referencing “he”, “she”, and “it” and leaving interpretation of the gender and referent open. To date, my research is the only empirical body of work on the topic. My Master’s research focused on the analysis of ta in marketing and advertisement discourse produced by Institutions on social media platform Sina Weibo (the equivalent of Twitter in China). I found that ta is used as a pragmatic device to enhance reader engagement.

Doctorate Research

My current Doctoral dissertation research continues my original work on ta and combines linguistics with the study of contemporary issues in society by focusing on referential forms in Chinese Pro and Anti LGBT discourses. My work, identifies 11 pragmatic functions of ta and exemplifies how ta can be used as a pragmatic device to create spaces of (a-)political (non-)belonging depending on a speaker’s stance towards issues of gender and sexuality.

Psycholinguistics Research

In collaboration with Jordan Gallant (Brock University), we conducted a psycholinguistic examination of ta using psycholinguistic self-paced reading experiments to investigate the processing and comprehension of TA compared to standard, gender-specific forms. In experiment 1, participants read sentences in which the pronoun antecedents were gender-specific kinship terms (mother, uncle, etc.). The key manipulation was whether the gender of the pronoun and antecedent were matched (mother + ‘she’), mis-matched (mother + ‘he’), or ambiguous (mother + ‘TA’). In experiment 2, occupational role nouns (doctor, secretary, etc.) were used as pronoun antecedents. Each occupation was presented with either a male, female, or ambiguous (‘TA’) pronoun. The psycholinguistics findings support prior corpus assisted discourse analyses of TA and help explain why it acts as a successful discourse tool. Since TA contains multiple possible interpretations, it allows for more personalized interpretation of text, which in turn helps to drive reader engagement.

Other Research

In addition to my dissertation research on ta, I have completed two side studies focusing on the use of ta in first-, second-, and third-person digital narratives on Sina Weibo and the implications this usage has for empathy.

Korean (and Japanese)

Comfort Women Discourses

This project examines the discursive choices of online Japanese and Korean communities regarding Comfort Women, in target and source text contexts, to investigate the role that third person referential forms and their “degrees of vulgarity” play in the construction of (distorted) identities by the Other for the “Other”.

현재 중국어에는 3인칭 대명사가 세 개 있습니다 : 他 ‘he’ ( ta [타] ),  她  ‘she’ ( ta [타] ), 它 ‘it’ ( ta [타] ).
